You may have realized that when you're outside of the UK, you can't access the BBC Iplayer abroad. The explanation is that the BBC uses something called Geolocation to limit viewing to specific users. Fundamentally what the BBC IPlayer site does is look at your IP address and compare it to a database to determine where you are surfing from.
If the database claims that your iP address isn't registered in the United Kingdom you will get blocked. It's worth trying though, a number of these IP databases are outdated and may wrongly place you in the United Kingdom even if you're not. As an example there's quite a chunk of French IP addresses that get listed as UK addresses and these can play BBC Iplayer without issues.
So what are you able to do if your IP address is listed as being outside of the UK, are the BBC Iplayer pleasures like Formula One and Match of the day denied you? Well there is hope and it's actually a relatively easy conumdrum to solve. So lets have a look at some options.
BBC IplayerProxy Options
the cheapest option but not really the most straightforward is to connect back to a UK machine, what you want is to make a straightforward VPN or SSH tunnel back to a PC in the UK. You can then modify your substitute settings in your browser and your IP address will appear to be based in the United Kingdom. This strategy works rather well if you have some technical data and access to a machine in the UK, one of the issues is that you will need a good upload speed from the UK machine or the connection will be extremely slow.
another choice is the BBC IPlayer stand in method, find a free proxy server and surf through this. Of course you'll have to make certain it's in the United Kingdom but it should enable to view BBC IPlayer. The drawbacks are that you have to ceaselessly search for new proxies, the free ones rarely last very long, occasionally only hours before they are overloaded. Ensure you don't do your normal perusing thru these proxies though and make sure your pathogen checkers are up to date.
The other method is to use a commercial option, this is just paying a fee to use a UK based substitute server. It works just about the same as the free method with the edges that it is much safer, much faster and you can connect any time you wish.
